Our Dearest Friends…

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

— Henry David Thoreau

At a farm in central Massachusetts the harvest is fast approaching.  Green fruit will turn golden, frost will follow right behind and as one season comes to an end a new one is set to begin: On October 4th, 2012, Farm School begins!

It will be a sudden shift to finally put down the cameras and slip into muck boots but this decision has been a long time in the making. For the last four years we’ve maintained a busy urban existence while steadily coaxing our city lot into a rural-esque oasis.  The more we dig, the more we grow, the more we find that farming leaves our bodies stronger, our minds quieter and the planet healthier.  Our greatest sense of spiritual connection is in being physically connected to the earth and to that end we are committed.  This next year will be a big step for us, but we make it trusting the direction our hearts are inclined to lead.

The practicality of living these values however, is a challenge.  Since committing to a year at Farm School, we have been budgeting, saving and strategizing about how to cover this investment while preparing for a year with one less income.  We’re making progress: In exchange for a small tuition break, Erik has been asked to maintain PloughAndStarsProject.com as the official student blog for The Farm School.  We’re approaching Whole Foods about a potential sponsorship and we’ve even been commissioned to produce a farm-inspired photo installation for someone’s kitchen.

But before the harvesting can begin we have one last push to close the remaining budget gap.  With the ideal of responsible dependence in our minds we come to you, our community, to ask for your support.
